3D model description

These stackable parts bins / storage boxes have been specifically designed to print in ‘vase mode’ to allow for very fast printing and low filament usage, whilst maximising strength.

These are ideal for any engineer, maker or hobbyist to keep their small parts & supplies organised and easily accessible, without taking up too much space.

Due to the speed at which these can be printed, a large set can be produced in very little time and using only a small amount of filament. The smallest size can easily be printed in around only 45 to 50 minutes.

The models are available for download in standard and extra-wide versions, each in three different sizes:

  • Small: 50mm(w) x 75mm(d) x 40mm(h)
  • Small extra-wide: 60mm(w) x 75mm(d) x 40mm(h)
  • Medium: 67mm(w) x 100mm(d) x 54mm (h)
  • Medium extra-wide: 80mm(w) x 100mm(d) x 54mm (h)
  • Large: 100mm(w) x 150mm(d) x 80mm(h)
  • Large extra-wide: 120mm(w) x 150mm(d) x 80mm(h)

(The above sizes have been rounded up to the nearest mm)

3D printing settings

UPDATE 18/8/22: There appears to be a 'vase mode' issue in Cura v5.1, in which the pattern printed for the bottom layers is the incorrect type. This results in all bottom layers printing in a concentric pattern regardless of the setting selected in the slicer, and this significantly compromises strength. Update: This appears to have been resolved in Cura v5.2.1

All models have been designed to print using ‘vase mode’ ('spiralize outer contour’ in Cura), so using default slicer settings will result in the models printing solid. It is also possible to print the models in non-vase mode by using zero infill and zero top layers. This could be useful for printing multiple models at a time on the same build plate, or for increasing the number of walls for additional strength (although printing multiple walls would significantly increase print time).

The models should be printed at a 45-dgree angle, as oriented in the STL files.

Using a line width 0.6-0.8mm provides significantly increased strength (0.8mm preferred).

I use a 0.32mm layer height and 30-35mm wall speed for these models, as I find this gives a good balance between print quality and speed.

No supports or infill are required.

The models shown in the photos were printed using a Creality Ender 3 V2 3D printer and sliced using Cura. All have been printed with a 0.4mm nozzle, however, it should be possible to use a larger nozzle size to achieve even faster print times.

Please make sure your 3D printer is designed to work safely using whichever settings you decide to use.
